Our Eco-Friendly Fabrics
Sun protection, sustainability, and style.
coLLo Apparel is a brand committed to sustainability in our fabrics and our dyes.
Our fabrics are made out of eco-friendly semi-organic and recycled materials such as modal and recycled polyester. Our low-impact dyes do not contain toxic chemicals, heavy metals, or mordants, have a high absorption rate in the fabric, and thus, require less rinsing and creates less waste water.
We offer a variety of eco-friendly fabrics with different material, blends, texture, and weight. No matter which of our eco-fabrics you choose all coLLo shirts are moisture wicking, made from four-way stretch materials, are rated for UPF 50 sun protection, and comes with the coLLo coLLar to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
About Recycled PolyesterEach coLLo shirt is made from the material of up to 15 recycled plastic bottles
Recycled Plastic Bottles
Each shirt begins with used plastic bottles. They are diverted from the waste stream either by individual collection or the municipal level by waste management companies. This reduces landfill, soil contamination, and pollution by the repurposing and recycling of otherwise waste material.
Sorting & Crushing
The gathered bottles are mechanically and hand sorted then sorted by the type of plastic they contain. They are then crushed, further sorted and processed into plastic chips for transport to a specialized recycling facility.
Cleaning & Processing
Once transported to a specialized processing facility the ground plastic bottles are washed, cleaned, and further sorted to avoid contamination of the plastic stream. This now cleaned plastic is then further ground into fine plastic chips for later processing.
The process of “polymerization” is when monomer molecules are reacted together in a chemical reaction to form new polymer chains. The fine plastic chips are de-polymerized and then re-polymerized into recycled bulk plastic pellets that can be used in many industrial and textile applications.
Using the bulk plastic pellets from the polymerization process the recycled plastic is then converted into staple fiber filament yarn for textile applications to be woven into coLLo Apparel various eco-friendly fabrics. This recycled polyester creation process overall requires fewer petroleum products and less energy to produce than virgin polyester textiles.
This process of converting PET into recycled polyester requires much less energy than in the case of normal polyester. In fact, it takes 33-53% less energy. Besides energy requirements the two main advantages to this process:
- Using more recycled polyester reduces our dependence on petroleum as the raw material for our fabric needs.
- Diverting PET bottles for this process reduces landfill, and thus less soil contamination, air, and water pollution.

What are modal fabrics?
Modal is an eco-friendly semi-synthetic cellulose based rayon fabric made from the reconstituted cellulose of pulped beech trees. It is very soft, drapes well, resists creasing, has a smooth lustrous finish, and is popular in athletic wear.
What is a low-impact dye?
A low-impact dye is a dye that has been classified by the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 as eco-friendly. Generally, low-impact dyes do not contain toxic chemicals, heavy metals, or mordants. They have a high absorption rate and require less rinsing, generating less waste water.
