Dermatologists agree – you need more than sunscreen in strong summer heat

AS SUMMER HEAT INTENSIFIES, THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO FIND MORE WAYS TO KEEP PROTECTED FROM DANGEROUS SUN EXPOSURE, DERMATOLOGISTS WARN.

Here is a scary fact: One in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetimes, which means that each year there are at least one million new cases in the U.S. alone.

Each year around this time we begin to hear about the dangers of excess sun exposure and radiation. From mild sunburns to dangerous sun poisoning we can be instantly made miserable by just a bit too much sun. We also have to worry about the long-term effects of sun damage including Basal Cells, which are called “pre-cancer cells” and then, the big C word – Cancer.

According to an article from the American Cancer Society, rates of melanoma continue to rise and at the current pace, we can expect 112,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2030, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Melanoma, a dangerous type of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body if not caught early is a dangerous, yet preventable cancer. Melanoma can be caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) raysfrom the sun.

Innovative prevention efforts are needed

The CDC report is calling for more community prevention efforts beyond sunscreen. The report says effective community skin cancer prevention programs could prevent an estimated 21,000 cases of melanoma per year and save $250 million per year beginning in 2020 through 2030.

Take these steps to protect your skin

  • Cover up: When you are out in the sun, wear protective clothing and a hat to protect as much skin as possible. Don’t forget sunglasses that can block dangerous UV rays.
  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at 30 at the minimum.  A stronger SPF can be used for people with more sensitive skin.
  • Seek shade and stay indoors during peak heat hours.

STAY ACTIVE AND SAFE WITH INNOVATIVE PROTECTION

While avoiding the day sounds great in theory, we certainly don’t want to spend a majority of our day indoors “avoiding the sun”.  We found several companies advancing the industry of skin protective clothing to see how it works and if it is a good sensible option.

Introducing  coLLo apparel:

coLLo appareL, a company out of Newport Beach, Ca has developed a patented collar that protects the back of the neck and is made of UPF 50+, moisture wicking, 4-way stretch material. Their collar comes in 2 sizes- 3 inches (Edge1) and 2.5 inches (Edge2) and is made high enough to cover the back of the neck. Tom Hurst, the founder, explains, “when I was outside, I was constantly getting bad sunburns behind my neck; furthermore, my skin was looking leathery, but the lowest was the basal cell I had to get removed. I was not the only person having this dilemma. So, I started coLLo appareL and developed a stylish dermatologist approved "SunSmart" product. We know it works and we are excited to keep sharing the benefits with the world to keep their skin safe and healthy.”
