Step 1

Recycled Plastic Bottles

Each shirt begins with used plastic bottles. They are diverted from the waste stream either by individual collection or the municipal level by waste management companies. This reduces landfill, soil contamination, and pollution by the re-purposing and recycling of otherwise waste material.

Step 2

Sorting and Crushing

The gathered bottles are mechanically and hand sorted then sorted by the type of plastic they contain. They are then crushed, further sorted and processed into plastic chips for transport to a specialized recycling facility.

Step 3

Cleaning and Processing

Once transported to a specialized processing facility the ground plastic bottles are washed, cleaned, and further sorted to avoid contamination of the plastic stream. This now cleaned plastic is then further ground into fine plastic chips for later processing.

Step 4

Polymerization

The process of “polymerization” is when monomer molecules are reacted together in a chemical reaction to form new polymer chains. The fine plastic chips are de-polymerized and then re-polymerized into recycled bulk plastic pellets that can be used in many industrial and textile applications.

Step 5

Recycled Polyester

Using the bulk plastic pellets from the polymerization process the recycled plastic is then converted into staple fiber filament yarn for textile applications to be woven into coLLo Apparel various eco-friendly fabrics. This recycled polyester creation process overall requires fewer petroleum products and less energy to produce than virgin polyester textiles.
